Universities are crucial to national competitiveness and development. For over 30 years, under neoliberal policy in many countries, governments have implemented accountability mechanisms to make universities more efficient, accountable and responsive to the needs of society.
In reality, these mechanisms constrict universities to serving the needs of the economy and industry. Research increasingly shows counter-productive results arising due to a focus on measurable and entrepreneurial outcomes that preference technical and scientific disciplines; de-value of the broader social role of universities; and undermine the ethical and professional dimensions of Academia.
In this workshop we will consider the essential nature of academic role and the need for much more coherence in higher education policy based on clarity about the broad social role of universities and a deeper understanding of the role academics play in achieving the desired outcomes.
We will explore the need for accountability process for universities and Academia that serve this broad social purpose and enable academics to do their work in accordance with their role as teachers and/or researchers.
We introduce the Professional Ethical Framework for Australian Academics. The Framework can be found on the website of the Australian Association of University Professors (AAUP https://professoriate.org ). It is designed as a re-conceptualisation of Academia in this more accountable context that:
We seek feedback on how The Framework might be improved and its suitability as a means of communicating to other stakeholders that the ethical underpinnings of academic work are crucial to its trustworthiness.
